Kevin Mack, owner of the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, has proudly served the North Quabbin community since 1998. He grew up above his father’s funeral home, the Mack Funeral Home in Gardner and held an apprentice’s license since his teen years until becoming a licensed funeral director in 1992.  Kevin was entrusted with the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol upon Mr. Fiske's retirement in January of 1998, and entrusted with the Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main Street, Athol in June of 2004.
The new Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, which opened in March of 2011, represents an evolution in funeral service that dates back to the early 1900s. At that time, it was customary for families to hold wakes in their front parlors, giving family members and friends the opportunity to visit and pay respects to the family. The deceased would be viewed in the casket at home and buried in graveyard behind the church the following day. Sometime after the turn of the century, the need for specialized services to accommodate funerals was recognized. Mr. James Edward Murphy and Mr. George Fiske made the changes that allowed funeral services and calling hours to move from private residences to a central location that was designed to hold many people. Their progressive thinking was well-received as facilities were modified to accomplish this goal.
As time has passed – over 80 years for the Murphy Funeral Home and over 60 years for the Fiske Funeral Home – the requirements evolved for parking areas, accessibility, and rooms that can accommodate funerals of all sizes from very large to small, intimate gatherings. The new Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home is a progressive step that recognizes the need to provide for formal and informal, large and small services.
Kevin Mack explains, “Many families prefer a more informal setting during the visitation and service.  They would rather have small conversation areas around the room.  Families want to be more accessible to their visitors and prefer to sit in the middle of the room, eliminating the rows of seating that are a more traditional format.  We have the capability to set up the room in either a more informal or traditional way to meet these requests. In a sense, we are bringing the service full circle – back to the time when people sat around on couches and reminisced and greeted their friends and relatives in a more home-like setting.”
The building design features a country home style with roof cupolas, portico, and a roof-top weathervane. Pillars, featuring field stone accents, frame the entry foyer which opens onto a hallway that includes a fireplace on the opposite wall.    The result is a very home-like and warm setting.
George Fiske, Jr., former owner of Fiske Funeral Home, commented, “The type of funeral home Kevin has built is very much the way funeral homes are being built today. Having had an opportunity to see the new funeral home I truly believe that people will appreciate that all their needs during a most difficult time will be met in a very gracious, personal, and fulfilling manner.” He added, “Barbara and I had the privilege of serving our community for many years and wish Kevin, Michele and their staff the same satisfaction and appreciation as we received.”
Collaboration with the Conservation Committee in Orange throughout construction has resulted in the preservation of the environmental status of the site. There is a foot bridge connecting one area of the parking lot to another, protecting the ecosystem and the beauty of the surrounding area. Kevin and his staff are honored to offer this facility to the families of the North Quabbin area.
